At least 3 people were killed and 49 injured in a train crash in Egypt, according to the country’s health ministry on Saturday, September 15th. The crash occurred in the city of Zagazig, the capital of Al Sharkia governorate. In response, 30 ambulances and additional medical teams were dispatched to the scene, the ministry said in a statement.
The injured were taken to Al-Ahrar and Zagazig University hospitals, and rescue operations are still underway. The ministry noted that at least five of the injured are in critical condition. Egypt’s railway system has a tragic history of deadly accidents, with nearly 2,000 train incidents reported annually in recent years. In 2021, 32 people died and 165 were injured in a train collision. Other major accidents include a fire in 2019 at Cairo’s Ramses station that killed 25, and a 2017 crash in Alexandria that claimed more than 40 lives.
The deadliest train disaster in Egypt occurred in 2002, when a fire on a train travelling from Cairo to Luxor killed more than 360 passengers.
