Nigeria : floods sweep zoo animals into Nigerian communities

Floodwaters from an overflowing dam in northern Nigeria have inundated a zoo, sweeping animals such as crocodiles and snakes into nearby communities as the region grapples with its worst flooding in years. In Borno State, one of the hardest-hit areas, officials at a state-run zoo reported Tuesday that over 80% of the facility's wildlife had perished due to the rising waters, with dangerous reptiles now roaming residential neighbourhoods.

The flooding occurred after the Alau Dam, located 12 miles southeast of Maiduguri, overflowed over the weekend, submerging entire houses. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has described the flooding as the worst in Maiduguri in 30 years. Although no human deaths have been confirmed in this particular flood, more than 200 people have died in other floods across Nigeria in recent weeks. The UNHCR estimates that 280,000 people have been affected in Maiduguri, with 200,000 displaced.

Nationwide, weeks of severe flooding have claimed 229 lives and displaced over 386,000 people, according to the latest data from NEMA. Northern Nigeria has borne the brunt of these floods. One of the spillways of the Borno dam collapsed, leading to a dramatic increase in water flow, exacerbating the flooding, according to NEMA's spokesperson.

Nigeria’s meteorological agency (NIMET) had previously warned of flash floods due to torrential rains, and last month, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) issued alerts about rising water levels in the Niger River. Climate change is intensifying extreme rainfall across Africa, including Nigeria, as global temperatures rise, according to projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
