Nearly 4 million people in southern Japan were urged to evacuate on Thursday as Typhoon Shanshan made landfall, bringing hurricane-force winds, torrential rain, and dangerous storm surges to Kyushu island. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an emergency warning, predicting severe flooding and landslides with record rainfall expected across Kyushu, the southernmost main island of Japan.

The storm caused widespread disruption, with hundreds of flights cancelled, bullet train services suspended, and major companies, including Toyota, shutting down factories. Authorities issued a “life-threatening situation” warning for towns in Kyushu’s Oita prefecture, urging 57,000 people to take “life-saving actions” as the highest typhoon alert was activated. A Level 4 evacuation advisory, impacting 3.7 million residents, was in place across all of Kyushu. As of Thursday morning, one person was reported missing, and dozens were injured. Earlier in the week, three people died in a landslide triggered by the typhoon’s destructive winds and rain.

Typhoon Shanshan weakened as it moved north through Kyushu, downgraded to a tropical storm by Friday. Despite this, it continued to dump heavy rain, with some areas receiving up to 1 meter (40 inches) of rainfall. The storm caused extensive damage, with over 255,000 households losing power.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi warned of "record-breaking rainfall" and significant damage, prompting the suspension of services on major highways and bullet trains. The typhoon is expected to move slowly across Japan’s southwest and into central regions, bringing continued heavy rainfall over the weekend.
