This is not a scene from a horror movie, this is considered to be one of the most incredible moments in the history of medicine 100 years ago. In 1922, at the University of Toronto, scientists went to a hospital ward to see diabetic children, most of whom were in a coma and dying of diabetic ketoacidosis. Imagine a room full of parents sitting by the bed waiting for the inevitable death of their child.
Scientists went from bed to bed and injected children with a new purified extract. When they started administering the new substance to the last comatose child, the first child began to awaken.
Then, one by one, all the children came to life after a diabetic coma. The room of death and darkness has become a place of joy and hope. Insulin was discovered by Sir Frederick G Banting, Charles H Best, and JJR Macleod and it was later purified by James B Collip. This moment that was real is considered one of the most magical moments of science.
