Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Monday 12 May for the first time since Operation Sindoor, delivering a strong message to Pakistan in the wake of rising tensions over cross-border terrorism.
In a firm and resolute tone, Modi warned that India’s patience has limits, stating, “We have always chosen the path of peace, but continued provocation through terrorism will not be tolerated. Our forces are prepared to respond to any threat to national security.”
Operation Sindoor, a covert military action reportedly targeting terror launchpads across the Line of Control, marked India’s latest response to persistent cross-border attacks. Though the government has yet to reveal full details, defense sources say the operation was swift, strategic, and successful in neutralizing imminent threats.
Modi reiterated that future dialogue with Pakistan will be restricted to terrorism and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). He also reinforced India’s longstanding position: “Terror and trade cannot go together.”
No Reference to US Claims
Earlier the same evening, US President Donald Trump claimed credit for defusing tensions between India and Pakistan, suggesting his offer of trade deals helped both sides step back from conflict. However, Modi made no mention of US involvement or Trump’s statements, signaling India’s clear stance against third-party mediation in bilateral matters.
Strategic Significance
Experts believe Modi’s speech was meant to demonstrate strength and reaffirm India’s policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism. It also sent a clear message to the international community that India intends to deal with Pakistan on its own terms.
“This wasn’t just about Pakistan—it was about reminding the world, and Indian citizens, that national security is non-negotiable,” said strategic affairs analyst Ajay Sahni.
