Nepal Blocks Facebook and Other Major Social Media Platforms

The Government of Nepal has officially blocked Facebook and several other global social media platforms after they failed to comply with new regulations requiring local registration.

Platforms affected include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, LinkedIn, and Reddit. The move comes after a Supreme Court directive that all social platforms operating in Nepal must register with the government and appoint local representatives by September 3.

According to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the decision aims to curb online crimes, hate speech, misinformation, and identity fraud. Authorities confirmed that platforms completing the registration process will be unblocked immediately.

Meanwhile, TikTok, Viber, and a few other services remain available, having fulfilled the new legal requirements.

Critics have raised concerns over digital rights and freedom of speech, warning that such sweeping bans may harm communication, education, and small businesses. However, the government insists the regulation is about accountability — not censorship.

The situation continues to develop as tech companies consider their next steps.
