Ecological disaster: 'Terrifying' plastic hybrid rocks discovered on a remote Brazilian island

The geology of the volcanic island of Trindade, Brazil, has attracted the attention of scientists for years, but the discovery of "hybrid rocks" on the remote island is raising alarm bells, Reuters reported on March 16.

Molten plastic combines with sediment particles on the island to form a "plastic hybrid rock." Researchers say this is evidence of the increasing negative impact of humans on the Earth's geological cycles.

"This is both a new discovery and a worrying warning that pollution has reached the geology," said Fernanda Avelar Santos, a geologist at the Federal University of Parana.

Trindade Island is one of the most important conservation sites for green turtles in the world. Thousands of green turtles come here to lay their eggs every year. The only people on the island are members of the Brazilian Navy. They stand guard at a base on the island and monitor the turtles' nests.
