A fire broke out in a huge, 16-storey residential building in Hong Kong on Wednesday morning, killing at least five people and injuring 36 others.

Around 250 people were rescued from the New Lucky House in Hong Kong's Jordan neighbourhood, and the fire was put out.

According to the fire brigade, the fire broke out on the first and second levels of the 16-story building, which included a gym and licensed guest rooms. Officials said more investigation was needed to determine the cause of the incident.

The five who were killed were attempting to flee the building.

The New Lucky House, which contains 200 units, was built in 1964.

Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee offered his condolences to the victims' families and stated that the necessary departments have been directed to assist all those affected by the incident.
