China: Gas explosion makes two dead and dozens injured

Drishtee Lokee

At least two people died and 22 others injured after a suspected gas explosion at a restaurant in northern China.

The explosion occurred shortly before 8 a.m. (00:00 GMT) on Tuesday in the city of Sanhe, less than 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Beijing.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, the explosion was likely caused by a gas leak at a fried chicken store, and the injured were rushed to the hospital.

Rescue crews hurried to the scene of the Sanhe explosion, with the local Langfang fire station reporting 36 rescue vehicles and 154 personnel sent.

Police blocked off roadways and directed people away from the scene.

In recent months, China has experienced a number of fatal accidents, many of which are the result of inadequate safety standards and poor enforcement.

Last month, a residential building in the eastern city of Nanjing caught fire, killing at least 15 people and injuring 44 others.
