Ireland: 12 people injured following severe turbulence on Ireland-bound flight
On Sunday, six passengers and six cabin crew were hurt in turbulence while flying over Turkey, from Qatar to Ireland.
The "Qatar Airways flight QR107 from Doha landed safely as scheduled at Dublin Airport shortly before 13.00," according to a statement from the Dublin Airport Authority.
The aeroplane "experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey," the report stated.
When the plane landed, emergency personnel, including police and firefighters, were waiting for it. "The Dublin Airport team continues to provide full assistance on the ground to passengers and airline staff," said the DAA.
All passengers were assessed for injuries, before eight people were taken to the hospital. In a statement, the airline company confirmed, “a small number of passengers and crew sustained minor injuries”.
The airline did not elaborate on what happened on the flight, but said it would launch an “internal investigation”.
Turbulence-related deaths and significant injuries are uncommon since flight crews can generally forecast adverse weather and rough air ahead of time and are educated to deal with the consequences. However, climate change exacerbates turbulence.
A research conducted last year by meteorologists at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom discovered that climate change has made the sky up to 55% bumpier than they were four decades ago.
