Spain's Women's World Cup Captain Receives Heartbreaking News After Triumph

Carmona netted the lone goal of the match in the 29th minute, securing Spain's first-ever Women’s World Cup trophy in their history.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) shared the news of Olga Carmona's father's demise on social media. They revealed that the footballer received this tragic information following the conclusion of the World Cup final. An RFEF spokesperson conveyed that Carmona's father had been battling a prolonged illness and passed away on Friday, August 18th, just two days before the finals.

Respecting Carmona's focus on the most significant match of her life, her family and friends made the decision to withhold the news from her.

A central figure in Spain's historic tournament, Carmona participated in all six matches and contributed with two pivotal goals.

Her first, a 90th-minute winner against Sweden in the semi-finals, propelled Spain into their inaugural World Cup final. The second, in the final match held in Sydney on Sunday, August 20th, clinched the championship for Spain.

"I believe your strength guided me towards this exceptional accomplishment," Carmona expressed on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). She affirmed her conviction that her father watched over her during the game and would be filled with pride. Her post concluded with the poignant words, "Rest in peace, Dad."
