The High Commission of India officially commenced its 10-day countdown to the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY), hosting a special event that brought together media personnel and members of the High Commission for a unique session centered on Chair Yoga. As part of the lead-up to the global celebration of yoga on 21 June, the gathering witnessed participants engaging in accessible yoga practices designed to showcase the adaptability of this ancient discipline.
Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Shri Anurag Srivastava reflected on the origin of Yoga, its universal appeal, and the unprecedented support in the United Nations for declaring 21 June as the International Yoga Day. High Commissioner highlighted the theme of this year’s IDY,’Yoga for One Earth, One Health,’ which emphasizes the interconnection between individual well-being and the health of the planet. High Commissioner also underscored the robust India-Mauritius health partnership, highlighting India’s support for key facilities like the ENT Hospital, Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, the Mediclinic in Grand Bois, two Area Health Centers, the world’s first overseas Janaushadhi Kendra in Mauritius and the upcoming AYUSH Center of Excellence.
Ms. Sowmya N D, Yoga instructor from the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture took an engaging, calming, and rejuvenating session of Chair Yoga. Chair yoga is an accessible and inclusive form of yoga that adapts traditional poses for practice while seated or using a chair for support, making it ideal for individuals with limited mobility, seniors, or those seeking a gentle yet effective exercise. Further, the Ministry of AYUSH along with Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga has devised a Yoga Break (Y Break) protocol with an aim to help professionals to de-stress, refresh, and re-focus with a special focus on ‘Yoga in Chair’. It promotes physical health, mental clarity, and stress relief through seated stretches, breathing exercises, and mindful movements that improve flexibility, balance, and strength. It is particularly beneficial in settings like offices or community centers, chair yoga fosters wellness for all ages and abilities.
