Mauritius as the third country in the world along with the Netherlands, after Turkey and Brazil to have successfully achieved all measures according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control guidelines, was highlighted, during the launching of the ninth WHO Report on The Global Tobacco Epidemic 2023, at the Maritim Resort & Spa, Turtle Bay, Balaclava, on Monday 31st July.
Present at the event, Prithvirajsing Roopun, President of the Republic of Mauritius, expressed gratitude to the WHO for its efforts to combat tobacco consumption, while supporting the compelling figures on the number of deaths related to tobacco consumption, which he emphasized are a clear call to action.
He expressed his delight that Mauritius, as a Small Island Developing State, is doing its share and has demonstrated its strong dedication and steadfast resolve in addressing the difficulties connected with tobacco and its effects on public health through its latest achievement. 'We are banding together with the world community to take a bold stand against this global disease,' Roopun said.
Furthermore, the President reminded that the government has developed a National Action Plan for Tobacco Control 2022-26 to improve tobacco control measures, boost enforcement, expand cessation programs, and reduce youth smoking. President Roopun also reaffirmed the government's ambition to meet the aim of lowering tobacco prevalence by 30% by 2030, as well as its commitment to ensuring a healthy life and promoting welfare for all ages.
