20 March: International Day of Happiness

On March 20th, people around the world come together to celebrate the International Day of Happiness. This special day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, recognises the importance of happiness and well-being as universal goals for all human beings.

Why Happiness Matters

Happiness is not just a fleeting emotion; it’s a fundamental human goal. The UN acknowledges that a more inclusive, equitable, and balanced approach to economic growth is essential which should promote the happiness and well-being of all people.

Governments and international organisations play a crucial role in creating conditions that support happiness.

These conditions include upholding human rights, integrating well-being and environmental considerations into policy frameworks, and working toward the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Research shows that happier societies are healthier, more productive, and more peaceful.

Average life satisfaction is closely linked to the effectiveness of governments in maintaining peace, social order, and the delivery of public services. By prioritising happiness, we can create a better world for everyone.

The Bhutan Connection

The resolution establishing the International Day of Happiness was initiated by Bhutan, a country that has long recognised the value of national happiness over national income.

As early as the 1970s, Bhutan adopted the goal of Gross National Happiness instead of Gross National Product. Bhutan hosted a High-Level Meeting during the 66th session of the General Assembly, focusing on “Happiness and Well-Being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm.”

This year’s World Happiness Report will be launched on Wednesday, 20 March 2024 12:00 PM EDT and will be centred around the theme of happiness for the young, the old, and everyone in between.
