Australia: Cocaine bricks found washed up on Sydney beaches

Five plastic-wrapped packages thought to contain cocaine have washed up on Sydney beaches.

Police seized the boxes, totalling 5kg, after they were discovered by beachgoers at Freshwater and Curl Curl on Monday. They claim it is part of a large cocaine cargo that has been washing ashore in pieces since December 2023.

According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Australians consume the most cocaine per capita in the world, followed by Britons.

On Tuesday, New South Wales police said in a statement: "As inquiries continue, the public are reminded to report any suspicious package to authorities."

More than 250kg of cocaine has been discovered along the New South Wales coast since the first parcel was discovered three days before Christmas on the Central Coast, roughly 90 kilometres (55 miles) north of Sydney.

Since then, packages weighing up to 39kg have been discovered on more than ten beaches throughout a 500-kilometer stretch of coastline.

A lifeguard filmed himself scooping one from the waves at Bondi on New Year's Day, while another packet was discovered on Valla Beach in the mid-north coast in March.

It's unclear how the bricks washed up in the ocean.

Some of the uncovered bricks were encrusted in barnacles, which authorities say imply the shipments were in the water for less than six weeks before being discovered.

According to the national law enforcement agency, Australians consumed 16.5 tonnes of methamphetamines, cocaine, heroin, and MDMA in the fiscal year ending August 2023, a 17% rise over the previous year.
