Australia: Man trapped for 36 hours in a drain, rescued

A Brisbane man has been rescued after spending nearly a day and 12 hours trapped underground, in a drain.

According to authorities the man in his 30s fell in the drain “while trying to retrieve his phone.”

He was rescued Monday morning after emergency services got a call from local resident James Lingwood saying someone was “stuck” underground.

A Queensland and Emergency Services spokesperson said the rescue effort took about five minutes.

Local officials say the man is in hospital following treatment for hypothermia and abrasions.

According to local media, he waded through storm water in search of an exit before being rescued by firefighters who removed a drain cover and allowed him to climb out.

The local council has previously issued caution to residents warning them to "always stay away from storm water drains, pipes, and manholes," classifying them as a series of "grates and pits" that might easily "trap someone." Other potential hazards in the waters include floating garbage and "poisonous substances".

It is unknown whether the man successfully recovered his smartphone.
