Australia: PM Albanese announces engagement

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced his engagement to Jodie Haydon, his companion of four years.

PM Albanese proposed on Valentine's Day, at the Lodge his official Canberra residence, with a ring he had designed.

PM Albanese, 60, and Jodie Haydon, 45, met during a business dinner in Melbourne in 2020.

He is the first Australian leader to engage while still in office.

Mr Albanese announced the news on social media, posting a photo with the message "She said yes."

"We are happy and excited to share this news, and we hope to spend the rest of our lives together. "We are so fortunate to have found each other," the couple both said in a statement.

Mr Albanese has a 23-year-old son named Nathan Albanese with former New South Wales deputy premier Carmel Tebbutt, with whom he separated in 2019 after 19 years of marriage.

The Labour Party leader has previously described how he and Haydon, who worked in the financial services industry, met and bonded a year later over their mutual love of the National Rugby League club.

He was speaking at a function in 2020 when he asked if there were any South Sydney Rabbitohs supporters in the audience, to which Ms Haydon exclaimed, "Up the Rabbitohs."

The couple maintained a quiet profile in the early stages of their relationship, before Haydon joined Albanese on the campaign trail in 2022 and on his international tours as Prime Minister.
