Victoria Police arrested two men after they discovered charred remains of a young woman in a burnt-out car in Scarsdale near Ballarat on Friday.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad made the arrests late Sunday afternoon, after identifying the body of Hannah McGuire, a 23-year-old Clunes woman found some 18 kilometres south-west of Ballarat.
Just before 10 a.m. on Friday, 5 April, emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle on fire in bushland near State Forest Road.
The Clunes woman's remains were located inside the vehicle, and investigators confirmed that her family had reported her missing earlier that morning.
On Sunday, police executed three search warrants at private homes in the nearby town of Sebastopol, arresting two 21- and 22-year-old men.
"The 22-year-old man has been released, while the 21-year-old man remains in custody and is currently being interviewed by police," Victoria Police said in a statement.
Police stated at this moment they believe the persons involved were known to one other, but the investigation continues.
