Bangladesh: Endangered Asian elephants get High Court protection

The Bangladesh High Court has handed a breakthrough verdict that dramatically changes the fate of the country's critically endangered wild elephants, marking a significant step forward in wildlife conservation.

The jurisdiction ordered a ban on adoption and protecting the elephants from exploitation.

In a significant step to wildlife conservation in Bangladesh, the High Court has given a verdict that will dramatically change the fate of the endangered Asian elephants.

Animal rights groups hailed the High Court's decision to suspend all licences, ensuring that young Asian elephants are no longer caught and held captive. Some of the animals were utilised for begging, circuses, and street performances.

There are currently just about 200 elephants in Bangladesh, with almost half of them kept in captivity.

The country was once a key home for Asian elephants, but poaching and habitat loss have resulted in a significant drop in their numbers.

Under the old scheme, juvenile elephants could be kept in custody while the forestry department provided licences to logging parties to utilise the animals to move logs. Others wound up in circus organisations. The court ruled that such exploitation violated the conditions of the licences.

Last year, a young elephant was killed by a train after being exploited for street begging, bringing attention to the issue. They are frequently painted bright colours and forced to perform tricks by their captors.

In 2019, police rescued two starving elephants that had been used for roadside begging.
