Brazil: 23 people killed by heavy rains and landslides

This weekend's heavy rains in Brazil killed at least 23 people in the southeastern states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo.

The state government of Espirito Santos announced Sunday that more than 5,000 people were evacuated and 15 people died as a result of severe rains that began Friday night.

Rio officials reported eight deaths on Saturday. Mimoso do Sul, a small city 74 kilometres (46 miles) south of the state capital, Vitoria, reported 13 deaths in Espirito Santo.

Rescue workers in both states were forced to halt their work Friday night due to the threat of fresh landslides, with attempts resuming Saturday afternoon.

Since Thursday, mayors and governors had warned people about natural disasters that might hit for the weekend in Brazil's southeast area.
