What appears to be a giant bubble bath in the footage shown above is actually the result of an acid spill that leaked into the Rio Seco river in Joinville.

According to local police, a truck carrying acid crashed and spilled the toxic substances into a river in southern Brazil on January 29.

A local state of emergency triggered as the foam is sulfonic acid, a substance which is used to produce detergents and household cleaning materials and can cause serious harm to human health.

In order to avoid the ingestion of contaminated water, a treatment station was closed on Monday morning, which could have an impact on the availability of drinking water for dozens of neighbourhoods.

Social media footage revealed individuals hoarding bottled water.
