Storms triggered flooding in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, killing at least 10 people and leaving more than 20 others missing. Helicopters were scanning the area for people who had been left stranded.
In other regions, the flooding is so severe that helicopters are unable to land and must lift residents to safety. The state's governor urged the federal government for assistance.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded, stating that the federal government will "join the efforts of state governments and municipalities to get through this difficult time, which is the result of climate change affecting the planet".
According to officials, ten persons were killed. Two people died after their car was washed away by floodwaters in Paverama, a tiny town. In Salvador do Sul, 21 people are still missing, and around 1,500 are stranded.
Residents of Candelária took to their roofs as their homes filled with water. Bridges have collapsed, rendering more than 20 streets unusable, making it difficult for rescue responders to reach the impacted neighbourhoods. According to meteorologists, a cold front will sweep across the region, bringing more rain.
Last year, a cyclone in Rio Grande do Sul killed more than thirty people. The Brazilian National Institute of Meteorology connected the increased intensity and frequency of rainfall to El Niño.
