The 78-year-old has been sick with lung disease since November of last year.
Tributes continue to flood in for Patriarch of Bulgaria's Orthodox Christian church, Neophyte, who died on Wednesday.
According to a church statement, he died as a result of "multiple organ failure" following a long illness.
The leader of the church had been treated for lung disease at the military medical academy in Sofia since November of last year.
Neophyte was the church's first elected head in the post-Soviet era. He tried to re-establish his position after rumours spread that he was linked to the communist secret police.
Orthodox Christians account for more than 80% of Bulgaria's almost 7 million population.
