China: Record 13 million students to sit in ‘world’s toughest’ college entrance exam

In contrast to U.S. students, who can retake SAT tests, the vast majority of pupils only have one chance at the rigorous test.

A record number of high school students in China have begun taking a highly competitive exam that could determine their future in a country suffering with a slowing economy and limited possibilities for young graduates.The two-day national college admission exam, or "gaokao," is the world's largest academic test.

More than 13.4 million students registered for the exam this year, breaking previous year's record of 12.9 million and making it the largest "gaokao" ever held in China.

Chinese official media has also dubbed it "the world's toughest" college admission exam because of its high stakes, competitiveness, and intensity, with students putting everything they have learned over the course of 12 years into a handful of topic assessments that each last less than 2 hours.

Chinese students spend years studying for this difficult exam, as a high score is the only way to get into the country's best universities. The exam covers areas such as Chinese literature, Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Politics, and History.
