Heavy rains in southern China prompted landslides on Tuesday, killing at least nine people, cutting power to entire towns, and burying crops. Meanwhile, northern areas of the country are suffering from drought, as the country experiences two extremes of terrible weather.

Four individuals died and two were missing in Wuping county, Fujian's coastal province, as a result of landslides triggered by severe rain. Heavy rain poured on Sunday afternoon, with authorities recording 372.4 millimetres of rainfall in a 24-hour period.

According to a Chinese news agency, at least 378 houses were destroyed in Wuping County, and 880 hectares of crops were damaged, resulting in economic losses of at least 415 million yuan ($57.2 million).

Landslides caused by extreme flooding killed at least five people in Meizhou, a city in southern Guangdong province near Hong Kong. Local media reported 15 others were missing.

More than 130,000 households in Meizhou lost power, with other neighbouring cities and villages cut off as of Monday. Three helicopters and more than 200 rescue teams were searching for survivors and delivering relief to the impacted areas, according to local authorities.

More than 11,000 people were relocated after the Hanjiang River in south China's Pearl River basin overflowed, burying crop fields and flooding homes.

Flooding in numerous counties in southwest Guizhou province forced the evacuation of over 1,100 people. Meanwhile, much of northern China, including the capital, Beijing, has seen high temperatures in recent days. However, rainfall is predicted in drought-affected areas over the next ten days, according to China's national weather service.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, flood-related disasters killed and left many people missing in 17 provinces across China last month.
