In a recent announcement, Australia unveiled its intention to ramp up its extraction and use of gas “until 2050 and beyond”, despite global calls to phase out fossil fuels.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government argues that this move is necessary to shore up domestic energy supply while also supporting a transition to net zero emissions. However, critics view this policy as a rejection of science, especially considering the International Energy Agency’s call for “huge declines in the use of coal, oil, and gas” to achieve climate targets.

Australia, being one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas, has also justified this decision based on its commitment to being a reliable trading partner. The strategy outlines plans to collaborate with industry and state governments to increase both production and exploration of natural gas.

Despite these justifications, environmental groups and critics have fiercely opposed the policy, emphasising that gas is a significant contributor to global warming and that building a net-zero policy around it could have catastrophic consequences. Gas currently accounts for 27% of Australia’s existing energy needs and is also exported to countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea.

The debate over this policy highlights the ongoing tension between energy security, economic interests, and environmental concerns in the context of climate change mitigation efforts.
