The European Union’s climate agency has announced that the first month of 2024 was the world's hottest January on record.
It's the eighth consecutive record-breaking month of heat, and the 12-month global average temperature has risen above the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C warming limit.
According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), January 2024 temperatures were 0.12°C higher than the previous warmest January, which was in 2020.
Temperatures were significantly above average in portions of Canada, northwestern Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
According to C3S, maritime temperatures were "unusually high" despite the current hot and dry El NiNo weather pattern decreasing in the Pacific.
In 2015, over 200 UN member nations joined the Paris Agreement, a legally binding international convention on climate change.
Leaders committed to reduce emissions in order to keep global average temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.
However, the worldwide average temperature for the year ending January 2024 reached a record high of 1.52°C above pre-industrial levels.
According to the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, beyond the 1.5°C barrier risks "unleashing far more severe climate change impacts, including more frequent and severe droughts, heatwaves, and rainfall."
C3S Deputy Director Samantha Burgess stated, "Rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are the only way to keep global temperatures from rising."
