Colombia: Woman arrested after 130 venomous frogs discovered in her suitcase

A lady has been charged with wildlife trafficking after 130 deadly frogs were discovered in her luggage at the Bogota airport.

Colombian police discovered the Harlequin frogs in miniature film canisters, which were dehydrated and frightened, officials added.

The woman was travelling to Sao Paulo via Panama and claimed to officials she had received the frogs as a gift from a hamlet in southern Colombia.

Police say the frogs are a critically endangered species and can cost up to $1,000 (£780) each.

Harlequin frogs are native to Central America. According to Global Wildlife Conservation, 83% of the 94 harlequin toad species are at risk of extinction.

The frog's skin glands create a potent toxin capable of killing small creatures. Indigenous people have traditionally used their poison to coat the tips of their hunting arrows.
