A significant explosion in the Dominican Republic has claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals and left 65 others injured, as reported by the Dominican Red Cross.

In a statement released on Tuesday, also read 55 missing people following the event that occurred Monday in Villa Valdez, San Cristobal province.

Red Cross added that the blast also led three buildings to collapse near a shopping centre.

President Luis Abinader expressed his concern about the incident, on Monday and stated that he is closely monitoring developments from the National Palace, according to public broadcaster RTVD's Central 4 Noticias.

In response to the disaster, the president has authorized the mobilization of emergency services, including 20 ambulances and 14 firetrucks, to provide immediate assistance.
