England: Unexploded WW2 bomb found in garden

According to a social media post from Plymouth City Council, the bomb was found in a garden on Tuesday.

An unexploded World War II bomb discovered in a garden in Plymouth, England, was brought to sea and detonated, authorities said Friday.

According to a social media post by a member of the local parliament, Johnny Mercer, up to 10,000 people were affected when areas of the southern English city were sealed off to allow bomb disposal experts to remove the device.

The unexploded weapon was discovered in a yard on St Michael Avenue on Tuesday, causing four days of disturbance.

The decision to destroy the weapon at sea was made "after considering all options, including a controlled detonation on site," according to a government statement.

Leader of Plymouth City Council, Tudor Evans said: “I think it is fair to say that the last few days will go down in history for Plymouth. This war-time bomb has really brought out war-time spirit, people coming together to really support each other and whilst it has been really tough – we got through it.’’

On Friday, police closed highways and halted rail and bus services as the bomb was carried 1.4 miles (2.3 km) through the city's streets.

Thousands of people evacuated Plymouth as the 500kg (1,102lb) German World War II bomb was transported by boat outside the seawall and detonated at 21:51 local time.

Evans praised the bomb specialists for their bravery and who "put their lives on the line" as they removed the explosive.

In a statement Evan said: "It has been a rollercoaster of emotion the last few days, and I would like to praise the community for helping the emergency team in evacuating and supporting our effort to protect their home." Evans said in a statement.

“It is a day I will never forget. I am so proud of Plymouth,” he added.
