Entertainment: Cillian Murphy to star in Peaky Blinders movie, confirmed

Thomas Shelby has unfinished business. He will make a surprising come back in a film, starring Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy who portrays the gangster role, Tommy Shelby.

The streaming giant Netflix confirmed the news Tuesday night posting a photograph of the movie’s script.

Irish actor Murphy who will also co-produce the film said “This one for the fans”.

The six series hit drama ran from 2013 to 2022 showing the lives of gangsters in Birmingham in the early 20th century. Cillian Murphy had the lead role for the TV show.

"It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders," he commented.

The Peaky Blinders series first aired in September 2013 and transitioned to the fifth series in 2019, reaching an audience of over five million.

The series won a host of awards including the National Television Awards voted by the public and Bafta in 2018 for the best drama series. Cillian Murphy rose to fame battling zombies in ‘28 Days Later’ and playing gang leader Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders.

In 2023, he won the Academy Award in March playing the role of the father of the atomic bomb ‘Oppenheimer’. It made Murphy the first Irish born star to win best actor at the Oscars which cemented his status in Hollywood.
