First Woman Executed in Singapore in Almost 20 Years

Officials in Singapore confirmed that a woman was executed on Friday, marking the first execution of a woman in nearly two decades.

Saridewi Djamani, a Singaporean national, was found guilty of trafficking 30g (1.06oz) of heroin in 2018.

She becomes the 15th drug offender to be executed since March 2022, following the execution of Singaporean Mohd Aziz bin Hussain.

Singapore has one of the world's strictest anti-drug laws, which it maintains are crucial for protecting society. Under Singaporean law, anyone caught trafficking more than 500g of cannabis or 15g of heroin faces the death penalty.

The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) of Singapore stated in a release that Saridewi, who received a death sentence on July 6, 2018, had been given "full due process" in accordance with the law.

Last year, on October 6, the highest court in the city dismissed her appeal against the conviction, and a subsequent petition for a presidential pardon was also denied.

Her execution took place just two days after Aziz was hanged on Wednesday for trafficking 50g of heroin in 2017.
