A woman who ended up in intensive care was seriously injured after being mauled by three wolves while jogging in an animal park near Paris, according to French media.

The woman was bitten "on the neck, calf, and back" at the Thoiry zoo, around 40 kilometres west of the French capital, according to Versailles' chief prosecutor, Maryvonne Caillibotte, who also stated that her life was no longer in danger.

Zookeepers were alerted of the incident on Sunday afternoon when they heard the 36-year-old woman's cries for help. They were able to separate her from the wolf pack.

According to Christelle Bercheny, president of Wow Safary Thoiry, the victim entered the "American reserve" - the primary safari region where Mackenzie grey wolves, coyotes, bears, and a bison live- an area restricted to vehicles.

It was unclear "whether she made a mistake or if the trail wasn't clearly marked," Caillibotte said.

According to Le Parisien, an investigation has been launched on how the woman gained access to the area.

The park provides accommodations near the wolf and bear enclosures, with the lodge area protected by electric fences and ditches, reported France Info.

The woman and her family are reported to have spent the night in one of the zoo's safari-style lodges.

The three grey wolves are still in the safari zone, which was closed for investigation until mid-morning Monday.
