Flooding, rising river levels, and heavy rain killed a firefighter and delayed train service in southern Germany on Sunday.
The firefighter's body was retrieved when an inflatable watercraft carrying four firefighters capsized while navigating floodwaters to rescue inhabitants in the town of Pfaffenhofen on the Ilm River in southern Bavaria, according to a news agency.
Meteorologists predict that certain places received more rainfall in 24 hours than they regularly do in a month.
Germany's deputy chancellor, Robert Habeck, said he was taken aback by the death of a firefighter reported on Sunday while visiting one of the devastated cities.
"This situation, like many others, is extremely dangerous and has already claimed a life. "I wish the family and all relatives the strength they need during this difficult time," he said.
He was accompanied by Bavaria's Premier Markus Söder, who described the situation in his state as a "catastrophe".
"Many people are in desperate situations, forced to abandon their houses because the electricity is out, their things are at peril, and lives have already been lost. The cooperation between the fire department, police, Red Cross, and THW has been outstanding.
Meanwhile, a long-distance train derailed as the earth beneath a section of track crumbled in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg.
After the derailment, the train was struck by a landslide. To avoid flooding on other sections of the line, the train was rerouted to the location of the accident.
Deutsche Bahn said that 185 passengers were on board, but none were injured.
The German train operator has warned of widespread cancellations and delays across the network, with traffic impacted on lines such as Munich to Berlin, Stuttgart, and the Swiss city of Zürich.
