According to recent data, global warming exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius for the first time in history over the last 12 months, crossing a critical threshold that, if continued, will stretch the boundaries of life on Earth to adapt.
According to Copernicus, the European Union's climate and weather monitoring programme, temperatures over the past year have been 1.52 degrees higher on average than before industrialisation.
That 12-month average was enhanced by the hottest January on record, with temperatures 1.66 degrees higher than the pre-industrial average.
The Paris Agreement, adopted by the majority of the world's states in 2015, aimed to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius, ideally 1.5.
Scientists are more worried about long-term warming above these thresholds, but the 12-month record shows that the world is rapidly approaching the Paris Agreement's limitations.
