Hawaii: Big Island hit by 5.7 magnitude earthquake

The US Geological Survey reported a 5.7-magnitude earthquake near Pahala on Hawaii's Big Island on Friday.

A reporter for Honolulu ABC affiliate KITV claimed he felt powerful, severe shaking near Hilo on the Big Island.

"It was one of the strongest ones I've ever felt here," one hotelier claimed.

The governor's office stated that no tsunami is expected.

There have been no reported injuries in Naalehu, although some companies have lost power, according to local authorities.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the quake had little effect on Mauna Loa or the neighbouring Kilauea volcano, and its strength would not cause harm to structures or infrastructure.

Unrelated to the Hawaii earthquake, the United States Geological Survey reported a 4.6-magnitude earthquake in Malibu, California later that afternoon.

The Los Angeles mayor stated that the city's fire department was performing a normal check to assess any damage.
