India: Billboard collapse in storm makes 14 deaths, leaving dozens injured

The state government announced that they will provide financial support of 500,000 indian rupees (£4,767) to the affected families.

A big billboard toppled during a violent storm in the Indian city of Mumbai, killing at least 14 people and injuring about 60, according to authorities.

According to authorities, the billboard, which measured 70m by 50m, crashed on houses and a petrol station in the city's financial area on Monday.

With a rescue operation underway, emergency services fear that 20 to 30 people remain trapped.

The billboard fell as a rain and dust storm slammed Mumbai, uprooting trees and causing traffic gridlock and power outages.

Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra's deputy chief minister, stated that a "high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident." He also stated that the state government would provide financial support of 500,000 rupees (£4,767) to the families of those slain and injured in the event.

Flights at the city's international airport were temporarily suspended during the storm, with at least 15 planes diverted, according to local media.

Mumbai is one of numerous Indian cities that experience significant flooding and rain-related catastrophes during the monsoon season, which typically lasts from June to September.
