India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is now available at the renowned Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked France on the ceremonial launch of UPI at the Eiffel Tower.
In a post on social media site X, PM Modi stated that the move is an excellent example of supporting digital payments and developing ties.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) established the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), an Indian quick payment system, in 2016. This technology connects several bank accounts to a single mobile app (from any partner bank).
The NPCI explains that the apps' service combines many banking capabilities, such as smooth fund routing and merchant payments, onto a single platform.
The NPCI announced in a statement that its affiliate, NPCI International Payment (NIPL), has partnered with Lyra, a French e-commerce and proximity payments firm, according to PTI.
This collaboration has helped to ensure that the UPI payment system is accepted in the European country, beginning with the Eiffel Tower. Indian tourists visiting the Eiffel Tower can now scan a QR code created on the merchant's website to make a payment.
Eiffel Tower is France's first merchant to accept UPI payments. The service will soon be available to additional merchants in the tourism and retail sectors throughout France and Europe.
According to the statement, Indian tourists currently make up the second largest group of international visitors to the Eiffel Tower.
The Prime Minister recently invited French President Emmanuel Macron to be the Chief Guest for New Delhi's 75th Republic Day celebrations on January 26.
