A Kenyan government spokesperson said Friday morning that at least two people were killed and 222 people injured after a massive fire sparked due to a gas explosion in the Embakasi district, southeast of Nairobi.
The government representative Issac Maigua Mwaura said on X (formerly known as Twitter) that a truck “loaded with gas exploded, igniting a huge ball of fire that spread widely.”
The resulting fire consumed a nearby textile and garment warehouse, causing damage to many vehicles, as well as business and residential structures.
Mwaura said that this incident resulted in the loss of two fellow Kenyans who have regrettably lost their lives while being attended to at the Nairobi West Hospital.
According to the Kenyan Red Cross, 271 people have been admitted to Nairobi hospitals through various emergency departments.
Mwaura stated that the scene of the event has been secured, and a command centre has been established to assist with rescue operations.
