Mars: New volcano discovered after ‘hiding in plain sight’

A massive volcano has been 'hiding in plain sight' on Mars.

Scientists identified a volcano near the planet's equator in the eastern region of Mars' Tharsis volcanic area.

It has yet to be given an official name, but for the time being, it is known as Noctis volcano and is 280 miles wide.

That is roughly the distance between London and Cornwall, and it is somewhat higher than Mount Everest, Earth's highest mountain.

The volcano is located in the Tharsis region, which also has three other huge volcanoes: Ascraeus Mons, Pavonis Mons, and Arsia Mons.

The study's principal author is Dr. Pascal Lee, a planetary scientist from the SETI Institute and the Mars Institute based at NASA Ames Research Centre.

According to the study, Noctis has a bigger diameter than the others, but it appears to be more eroded, therefore, shorter.

Despite being photographed numerous times since 1971, the erosion is the cause of why the volcano has gone unnoticed until now.

Scientists believe the volcano has been active for a long time, and there may still be glacier ice beneath the massive edifice.

They call it a major discovery since it opens up a new place to study Mars in greater detail, including the search for life.
