Claudia Sheinbaum, a climate scientist, Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as Mexico's first female president in a historic landslide, with 58.3% to 60.7% of the vote, according to a statistical sample from the country's National Electoral Institute.

The governing party candidate ran on maintaining President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s six-year political agenda.

Despite a strong challenge from Opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez, his chosen successor, 61-year-old Sheinbaum, won the contest handily. It was the first time in Mexico that the two primary opponents were female.

President Sheinbaum has promised continuity, stating that she will continue to build on López Obrador's "advances" and expand on the welfare measures that have made the outgoing president popular.

In her victory address, she also emphasised what distinguishes this Mexican election from previous ones. As voters cheered, she said: "For the first time in the 200 years of the [Mexican] Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico."
