Phunjo Lama of Nepal has recently set a new world record for the fastest female ascent of Mount Everest, spending 24 hours and 26 minutes without pausing to sleep.
Her journey from Everest Base Camp to the top was 14 hours and 31 minutes, then the descent from Everest lasted another nine hours and 18 minutes. She departed Base Camp at 3:52 p.m. on May 23, arriving at the top of the world at 6:23 a.m. the next morning.
Mount Everest is 8,849 meters high.
Lama told the press that climbing overnight helped her avoid the large throng. She thinks that there were 6,700 people between Camps Two and Four on May 21-22. On the morning of the 24th, she was trailing "60 or 70" people.
Due to the necessity to acclimatise to the tremendous altitude, the fastest climb records are set from Base Camp. Lama spent three weeks there before her push to the top. She was joined by her climbing companion, Samantha McMahon, who has set the ambition of becoming the first Australian woman to climb all of the world's 8,000-metre peaks.
According to Guinness World Records, which measures the overall time it takes to return from Base Camp, Lama set her first Everest record in 2018 with a time of 39 hours and six minutes. In 2021, Ada Tsang, a Hong Kong resident, beat the record in 25 hours and 50 minutes. Lama's second ascent of Everest took place this year.
The current record for the fastest ascent by a male climber is 10 hours and 56 minutes, established by Nepali Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa in 2003.
