New York City : One person dead and five injured after shooting in subway station

Police say the victims, four men and two women ranging in age from 14 to 71, were all sent to nearby hospitals.

A shooting at a Bronx subway station on Monday evening killed one person and wounded five others, according to authorities.

Around 4:30 p.m. local time, officers responded to 911 calls of a shooting at the Mount Eden Avenue station and discovered six persons shot, NYPD Chief of Transit Michael M. Kemper told the media at a briefing Monday night.

Police say the victims, four men and two women ranging in age from 14 to 71, were all sent to nearby hospitals. One of the males, a 34-year-old, died at St. Barnabas Hospital, Kember reported.

The other victims' injuries were not life-threatening, according to authorities.

Kember stated that the shooting was not random and began inside a No. 4 train when two groups got into a fight.

According to Kemper, when the train approached the station, one of the passengers pulled out a gun and opened fire.

"This is unacceptable, and when detectives make an arrest ... there must be swift, immediate, strong consequences," he said.

Kemper added that some of the people shot were involved in the initial fight, while others were not. During the briefing, no additional information on the victims was provided.

Officials from the NYPD are reviewing security footage to gather evidence, while the suspect has yet to be identified.
