New Zealand: At least 50 passengers injured by ‘strong movement’ on a plane

The plane was travelling from Sydney, Australia, to Auckland, New Zealand.

At least 50 people were injured Monday in what officials described as a "strong movement" on a Chilean plane flying from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand.

According to a statement from LATAM Airlines, there was "a technical event during the flight which caused a strong movement. "It did not comment on what occurred.

When the aeroplane landed in Auckland, passengers were assisted by paramedics and more than ten emergency vehicles.

An ambulance representative reported that approximately 50 people were treated at the scene for primarily minor injuries, with 13 being transported to a hospital.

One patient was thought to be in serious condition.

Passengers reported that several passengers were not wearing seatbelts when aeroplane LA 800 abruptly descended.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner landed at Auckland Airport and was set to fly to Santiago, Chile.

"LATAM regrets the inconvenience and injury this situation may have caused its passengers and reiterates its commitment to safety as a priority within the framework of its operational standards," the airline said in a statement.
