Oscars 2024: Stars donned red pins calling for Gaza ceasefire

At the 96th Academy Awards, some Oscar attendees, including Billie Eliish and Mark Ruffalo, wore red pins calling for a cease-fire in Gaza.

The pins are for Artists4Ceasefire, an initiative funded by entertainment industry insiders that issued an open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden urging him to call for an "immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel." Around 4,000 artists signed it.

The pins show a red circle with an orange hand and a black heart inside it.

"The pin symbolises collective support for an immediate and permanent cease-fire, the release of all of the hostages and for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza," the group stated in a statement.

In his acceptance speech, director Jonathan Glazer, whose film ‘The Zone of Interest’ received the best foreign film prize, addressed the conflict in Gaza. He stated that he disputed "Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation."

The awards ceremony began somewhat later than expected on Sunday, after demonstrators demanding a ceasefire obstructed traffic outside the venue.
