In an effort to modernise the educational system, the Polish government has imposed severe limits on the quantity of homework that students must do. However, not all parents and teachers are convinced by the changes.
Teachers will no longer assign homework to students in the first through third grades. While homework is now optional for kids in grades four through eight, it does not count towards a grade.
The head of the Polish Teachers' Union, Sławomir Broniarz, acknowledges the need to reduce student load, but believes the new guidelines were implemented without proper engagement with educators.
According to Broniarz, eliminating homework may expand the educational gap between children who have great parental support and those from families with less support and lower expectations.
Poland's education system has experienced a series of contentious reforms, with nearly every new government implementing revisions. This has frequently left parents and teachers puzzled and discouraged.
