A road bridge has collapsed on train tracks in western Russia, killing one woman and wounding five others, according to local officials.

According to reports, all rail movement was halted in the town of Vyazma, Smolensk area, following the incident on Monday. Pipelines were also destroyed, causing around 8,000 families to be without gas.

The cause of the Paninsky flyover collapse is being examined. According to one news source, it was most likely due to old structure.

Several cars were suspected to have been on the bridge when it fell.

According to regional governor Vasiliy Anokhin, six of the bridge's seven spans have collapsed.

Three of the injured have been transported to Moscow, including a 14-year-old girl who is receiving treatment in a local hospital.

The governor says that more than 160 emergency professionals are working through the night to restore train service as soon as possible.
