San Francisco: Plane loses tyre after takeoff

A plane heading for Japan made an emergency landing in Los Angeles on Thursday 7 March after losing a tyre on takeoff from San Francisco.

Seconds after taking off, the jet lost one of its six main landing gear tyres on the left side.

The tyre landed in an employee parking lot at San Francisco International Airport, where it collided with a car and damaged its back window before crashing through a fence and coming to rest.

The flight had 235 passengers and 14 crew members. There were no injuries reported.

Fire engines were stationed at Los Angeles International Airport but were not required because the Boeing 777 landed safely and came to a halt about two-thirds of the way down the runway. The plane was then towed. .

Boeing 777s feature six tyres on each of their two primary landing gears. Built in 2002, the airline stated that the plane was designed to land safely despite missing or damaged tyres.

According to aviation experts, planes dropping tyres are an unusual event and do not indicate a broader safety issue or a fault caused by the manufacturer.

The Federal Aviation Administration is set to investigate the incident.
