Singapore: One dead after London-Singapore flight hit by 'severe turbulence'

One person was killed and numerous others injured on a Singapore Airlines flight from London that encountered extreme turbulence.

The Singapore-bound Boeing 777-300ER was diverted to Bangkok, where it arrived at 15:45 local (8:45 GMT).

According to the airline, Flight SQ 321 had 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board.

"Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased," it read.

The airline also stated that it was collaborating with Thai authorities to provide medical assistance to passengers, and that it was sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional support required.

Thai authorities have dispatched ambulances and emergency response teams to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Singapore's Transport Minister, Chee Hong Tat, stated the government would support the passengers and their families.

Turbulence may be predicted by flight crews, albeit it is more common in certain places of the planet. They are also trained to handle turbulence, according to general aviation expert John Strickland.
