At least six people were killed when an international express train collided with a bus at a level crossing in southern Slovakia, according to emergency workers.

According to a Facebook post by emergency services, the accident occurred in the town of Nove Zamky, some 80 kilometers east of the capital Bratislava, at 17:00 local time.

According to news media, at least five additional people were hurt in the event. The bus and train drivers were among those injured and sent to the hospital, with the former in critical condition.

Emergency services responded with five ambulances and three air ambulances.

All of the fatalities are believed to have been passengers on the Arriva bus, which was ripped in half by the hit, according to officials.

According to officials at a news conference, there were around 200 persons on the train and nine on the bus at the time of the incident.

The train was the normal EuroCity 279 service, which runs from Prague to Budapest via Bratislava.

"Let this sad event be a reminder for all of us to pay attention to safety on the roads and at railroad crossings."
